Fitball Squat
« on: October 31, 2010, 03:59:57 PM »
I'm worried about my back and the squat - it seems that if you get it wrong (even if you are experienced) you can really hurt it.

The ALC guy at the mine-site gym told me to use a fitball against a wall & holding two dumbbells next to me to do the squat. This way I can do the full motion (he helped me get the stance etc correct), get low enough to be beneficial but have the added security of the fitball/dumbbell combination so if it goes bad, I can drop the dumbell/roll onto the ball and save my back.

The thing is I feel kinda stupid doing it (especially at the mine there are some really strong guys up here) and dont know if it gives a decent result or not.

What is anyones thoughts on this?

Do you have an exisiting back injury? Why not just learn to squat properly?
Never argue with an idiot. They bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

I've had problems in the past with a pinched nerve in the back - I haven't had it for a while because I always watch out for my back as it isn't something I want to re-experience.

If you have a medical clearance I cant see that as a reason not to squat. As long as your form is right there should not be a problem.

Just start mega light and work up slowly. I would also recommend trap bar deadlifts. They have done wonders for my lower back.

Seriously the fit ball against the wall is about as useful as doing a hack squat to teach proper squat form!
Learn with no weight, then add something to mimic a bar such as a broom stick or pvc pipe. Then add a olympic bar (20kg) then slowly add weight. If your form starts to disintegrate then take a step back. Learning to squat properly is more important than adding weight now.

Proper form on air squats

Diego

My wife has tried many ways to exercise, she's always had issues with her back.

Many years of physio, I said enough is enough, she was so dejected, I felt for her, I found a kieser in camberwell in three weeks her mobility and spinal strength has improved 300%.

thats very interesting. my wife was in a car accident when she was 18. she had severe whiplash

she cant do anything with weights (even with extreme supervision) her neck goes out.

I'll see if i can get her to try this place...might be good!

BTW. Great to hear about your wife!

Please do!
You can claim it on health insurance.

I know you will be blown away with the results the equipment can achieve.

I'm very excited for Debbie.
