i would steer clear of "mass gainers". just buy On Protein and get the carbs from oats. Most mass gainers are full of sugar

i personally don't like the taste of any of the Aussie proteins....(not arguing if they are good quality or not)

Agree - Have used both On Whey & Cell Biology & like both.

Don't waste your money on No Xplode mate.  Spend your money on quality food instead.

I don't use any supplements at all. All food. All natural.
Gained 10 kgs so far. Supplements are a waste of money if you're just leisurely training for lifestyle/appearance purposes.
But if you're a serious competitive Bbuilder ... then might be a different story.

I mostly agree with you Matty, but when your diet is a little lacking for whatever reason, thats where supplements are handy. I know the best answer is to simply improve your diet, but there are moments where as a shiftworker at 3am in the morning with no access to refridgeration etc where a protein shake is much more convenient. And when I have worked 50-60 hours in 4 days, a multi vitamin doesn't go astray etc etc - You know what I mean  :)

Yeah fair enough.

But something I've come to realize is that supplements won't do anything for you if you don't get into the gym and stimulate your muscles. Same with food actually. Absolutely nothing.
Life is short. No regrets.

Just new to working out

Mate if you are new ( & some old skool guys I might add) you would be far better off finding a decent coach. You will get way more for your money training corectly than worrying about some milk shake that claims to make you look like Cutler or fight like Forrest.

I agree Cata - most of us trained stupidly for a period. I wish I had some of my time over again.

I was lucky to find this forum early on, read up on the Starting Strength program and have been getting advice from various members. Cant say I regret any of it yet. I'm not in it for serious power lifting or anything. Just general strength, wellbeing and the fun of it.

As for protein supps. I use it first thing in the morning because I dont get breakfast straight away and immediately after training. The rest of the time I just make sure my diet is sufficient.

If your going to be stupid, you better be tough.

My main advice now is about safety in training.

It all boils down to "why do you train and what is important to you?" If your ONLY focus is temporary glory or appeasing some macho urgings by yourself and others...plunge ahead and ignore the potential pitfalls.

If you train to enhance your life and the enjoyment of that life...you'll "go deaf" to the nay sayers and others that call you a wuss if you don't squat or deadlift until you "sweat blood."

Factis non verbis

The most important test a lifter has to pass - is the test of time.
